Statement Introduction. Most of my black and white photography is done in low light situations where there is an interaction between light and darkness, such as at dusk and dawn. I often work with long exposures in order to reduce the landscapes into elemental, graphic shapes. I like to simplify, to extract unnecessary elements, in order to emphasize the subject I'm working with. I also enjoy working in bad weather; snowstorms, mist, fog, or just under an endless dull and greyish sky. I think these conditions often add an appealing element to a black and white photograph.
Water Works I am constantly returning to the sea. Infinite horizons, tidal movement, the play of waves, shifting light and capricious coastal weather fascinates me. In this series from Iceland and France, I have focused on static and architectural structures in relation to the ever-changing, compliant water. I used long exposure times to allow for the integration of past and present in the same image. With this technique, time becomes registered cumulatively as transparent layers of frozen moments. A new dimension is revealed, which we cannot otherwise see. The image becomes a summation of the constant metamorphoses which occur when fluid and still meet. Process statement All photographs in Water Works were done with a Hasselblad 503cx medium format camera with a 80mm Carl Zeiss lens, or Hasselblad 903 SWC/M with a 38mm Biogon lens on black and white, silver based 120 roll film. The negatives were developed manually and printed as Archival Pigment Ink prints. Prints are available in following sizes.
Desert Light From the desert in the Southwest, USA, around the connecting borders of Arizona, Utah, Nevada and California, this body of work reflects my interest in Nature's own forms, lines, textures, and how they interact with each other in the presence of shadow and light. I am fascinated with the significant quality of light that appears during the brief moments of dusk and dawn. The desert contains a number of strong, graphic structures that both separate and integrate light and darkness in a prominent way. I found the desert a very rewarding environment to work in in that respect. These 17 photographs are printed as Archival Pigment Ink prints with the latest UltraChrome k3™ ink technology to ensure professional quality and longevity. Prints are available in following sizes. |
